FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Competing for a third-straight Northwest Conference heptathlon title, Puget Sound Logger senior Caitlin McGrane (Colville, Wash.) looks to be on her way, posting a career-best first day total of 2662 to hold a 128-point lead the the 2010 Northwest Conference Multi-Event Championship in Forest Grove, Ore.
McGrane opened up the seven-event competition with a first-place finish in the 100m hurdles to earn 814 points with a time of 15.21, her quickest time of 2009. She then set another personal best in the high jump, clearing 4-9 to pick up 566 points.
In the third event, McGrane finished third in the shot put with a best throw of 31-4.75, which was good for 501 points. She finished up the day with a personal-record 26.19 in the 200m dash to earn 781 points as she finished the first four events with 2662 points.
The 2662 points is 44 points better than her day one total from the 2009 NWC Multi-Event Championships, when she set a new school record with a total of 4,409 to win a second straight conference title.
In addition to chasing the conference crown, McGrane is also looking for a qualifying mark for the 2010 NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships. The automatic qualifying mark is 4575 points while the provisional score is 4100. She took ninth in the heptathlon at the national championships in 2009.
