TACOMA, Wash. - Sophomore Joe Cerne and senior Andrea Leiken looked to improve on their season-best marks before the bids to the NCAA Championships are announced on May 20. Leiken competed at Oregon's Twilite Meet on Saturday while Cerne was at the Western Washington Twilite Meet on Friday.
On Friday, Cerne competed in four events, all of which are part of the decathlon. In the 110-meter hurdles, Cerne ran a 17.52 to place 12th. He went on to clear 5-feet, 8.75-inches in the high jump. He came within inches of a personal-best in the shot put as he tossed the shot 31-feet, 11.25-inches. His best performance came in the long jump when he was less than an inch short of a PR. He leaped 19-feet, 9-inches to place 10th.
Cerne currently ranks 12th on the NCAA Division III Outdoor Decathlon list. The top-20 on the list will be be invited to compete at the NCAA Championships.
On Saturday, Leiken ran the 400-meter dash at the Oregon Twilite as she looked to improve her standing on the Divsion III Outdoor List. She ran a 58.13 to place second in the event. Her best time of 56.76 currently ranks 16th in the NCAA Division III. The top-22 times will be invited to the NCAA Championships.
Both Cerne and Leiken will wait to see if they are on the invited list of student-athletes when it is released on May 20. The NCAA Championships will take place in Calremont, Calif. on May 24-26.
