Loggers Get Revenge Over Lutes, 79-57

TACOMA, Wash. - Still with the bitter taste of a lopsided loss from a month ago, the Puget Sound Loggers got revenge over the rival Pacific Lutheran Lutes, 79-57, in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Tuesday evening at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.

The Loggers, who fell to the Lutes 69-36 on Jan. 6 in Parkland, got off to a quick start, opening the game with a 9-4 run.  The Logger lead grew to double-digits with 5:32 remaining in the first half on a jumper by Andrew Edwards (Yakima, Wash./Columbia Basin C.C.).  The lead grew to 16 as Puget Sound took a 34-18 lead into the break.  Junior guard Claire Ely (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) put up 13 points in the first half  to lead the Loggers.

The Lutes chipped away at the lead, pulling within five points with 11:10 remaining but all that seemingly did was wake the Loggers up once again as they rebuilt their lead back into double-digits.  The lead hit 22 on the final basket of the night as Jocelyn Riordan (Lake Forest Park, Wash./Shorecrest) hit a three-pointer with three second left to seal the 79-57 victory.

The Loggers were led by 22 points from Ely, who also added eight rebounds and five steals.  Riordan finished with 14 and senior post Karen Chase (Yakima, Wash./West Valley) scored 12.  Freshman Courtney Blume (Olympia, Wash./River Ridge)  added a season-high 13 off the bench.

Pacific Lutheran was led by 14 points from Amy Spieker and 14 from Trinity Gibbons.  PLU committed just nine turnovers on the night but made just 34.9% of their attempts from the field.

The Loggers will be in action again on Saturday night when they play host to fifth-ranked George Fox.  Tip-off with the Bruins is set for 6:00 p.m. at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
