Ely Named First Team All-NWC

SPOKANE, Wash. - After taking the on-court reigns of the Puget Sound Loggers women's basketball team, junior guard Claire Ely (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) has been named to the First Team All-Northwest Conference as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

Ely led the Loggers with 12.9 points per game in 35.9 minutes per game as she started all 27 games for the Loggers in 2008-09.  Ely also added 3.6 assists per game and 2.7 steals per game to lead the Loggers to a second-place finish in the Northwest Conference standings and a fourth-straight appearance in the NWC Championship Game.

Senior post Karen Chase (Yakima, Wash./West Valley) was named a Second Team All-NWC selection.  Chase, who scored her 1000th career point against Whitman, averaged 12.0 ppg for the Loggers, also averaging 8.4 rebounds per game and 1.4 blocks per game.

Senior Kristen Shielee of George Fox was named 2009 NWC Player of the Year and GFU head coach Scott Rueck was named NWC Coach of the Year as the Bruins completed the regular season as one of two undefeated teams in the nation.

Jocelyn exploded on the scene as a freshman and will be looked to help lead the Loggers as just a sophomore but it's a challenge she is happy to accept. "Being a Logger means being a well-rounded student, athlete and person. You have to work hard in the classroom, on the court and in the community."
