Loggers Blast Past Mountaineers, 67-49

CALDWELL, Idaho – Sophomore Jocelyn Riordan (Lake Forest Park, Wash./Shorecrest) scored 20 as the Puget Sound Loggers blasted past the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers, 67-49, in a non-conference women’s basketball game at the Lady ‘Yote Classic on Friday evening in Caldwell, Idaho.

The Loggers took the lead just 29 seconds into the game on a three-pointer by Riordan and Puget Sound never looked back. Just nine minutes into the game, the Loggers pushed the lead into double-digits but the Mountaineers began to comeback. With the Loggers up 28-16, EOU scored 13 straight points to end the half as Eastern Oregon took a 29-28 halftime lead.

The two squads battled it out for the first part of the second period. The Loggers began to pull away around the midway point, pushing the lead back into double-digits with 9:43 left to go in the game and the maroon and white never looked back. Puget Sound pushed the lead to 20 points with 1:55 left to play on a layup by Val Middleton (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) but Eastern Oregon made a layup with 39 seconds left to put the game at the final 67-49 score.

Puget Sound was led by the 20 points from Riordan. Senior Claire Ely (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) added 16 points and eight assists in the win while freshman Lindsay Layland (Homer, Alaska) recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double. Senior Natasha Ludwig (Hilo, Hawaii/Waiakea) brought down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Eastern Oregon was led by 20 points from Alyssa Garro and 10 points off the bench from Shaylee Neilsen. The Mountaineers held a slight advantage in rebounds, 34-32.

The Loggers conclude action in the Gem State on Saturday evening when they take on host College of Idaho at the Lady ‘Yote Classic in Caldwell, Idaho.
