Prewitt, Loggers' defense topple Simpson in overtime, 77-69

LAS VEGAS, NevadaElizabeth Prewitt scored a career-high 31 points and the No. 23 Puget Sound women's basketball team beat Simpson in overtime, 77-69, on Thursday afternoon. The Loggers (10-1) won both of their games in the Classic in Las Vegas.

Prewitt scored the first points in the extra period with a 3-pointer that gave Puget Sound a 62-59 edge 20 seconds into overtime. Following a defensive stop, Prewitt hit another trey to give the Loggers a six-point lead.

Puget Sound made another stop on the defensive end, and Alexis Noren's jumper put the Loggers up, 67-59, and forced Simpson (3-7) to call a timeout with 3:11 on the clock.

The Storm's Ellen Gallagher hit a 3-pointer that cut the Loggers' lead to 74-67 with just over a minute left, but a free-throw and jumper by Prewitt down the stretch put the game well out of reach.

Noren filled the stat sheet with 10 points, six rebounds, seven assists, and four steals. Caitlin Malvar added seven assists for second consecutive game, and she pulled down eight rebounds.

Samone Jackson scored 13 points for Puget Sound, and Jamie Lange added 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Although the Loggers shot 39.2 percent from the floor, their defensive efforts proved to be the difference. Puget Sound forced the Storm into 20 turnovers, which led to 24 points for the Loggers.

Puget Sound returns to its Northwest Conference schedule when it hosts Willamette on Friday, Jan. 6, at 6 p.m.
