Loggers welcome Bearcats, Pioneers to ring in 2017

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound women's basketball team begins the 2017 year by hosting a pair of Northwest Conference games this weekend. The Loggers welcome Willamette on Friday, before hosting Lewis & Clark on Saturday.

Puget Sound's last week

The Loggers (10-1, 2-0 NWC) wrapped up the 2016 calendar win with a pair of wins in Las Vegas at the D3hoops.com Classic. Puget Sound took down Coe, 76-47, before knocking off Simpson, 77-69, in overtime. Elizabeth Prewitt scored 54 total points in the two wins, while Samone Jackson scored 15.5 points per game.

Ranked

The Loggers have been ranked for four consecutive weeks. They currently check in at No. 18, their highest ranking this season.

Conference Honor

Elizabeth Prewitt has been named the Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week twice in the early part of the 2016-17 season. The sophomore earned the honor following the opening weekend of NWC games. She was recently named the Student-Athlete of the Week again, after her play at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas. Prewitt is currently tied for the lead league in scoring, with 18.7 points per game.

How it stands

Heading into the second weekend of league games, Whitman (11-0) and Puget Sound (10-1) are both 2-0 in conference play. George Fox (10-2) and Lewis & Clark (9-3) sit just behind with a 2-1 record against NWC foes. Whitman is ranked No. 16 by D3hoops.com, while George Fox is No. 20.

Scouting the Bearcats (8-3, 1-1 NWC)

Willamette University most recently defeated Multnomah, 76-43, after dropping two nonconference games to Carroll (73-63) and Montana State-Northern (56-49). The Bearcats split their opening two conference games, losing to Whitman (61-46) before defeating Whitworth (72-48). The team is currently scoring 68.3 points per game, led by Kylie Towry, who is scoring 13.5 ppg. Madi Andresen leads the squad with 5.2 rebounds per game.

Scouting the Pioneers (9-3, 2-1 NWC)

Lewis & Clark College most recently fell to George Fox, 79-61. The team went 3-1 in nonconference games in December. The Pioneers began their Northwest Conference slate of games by taking down Pacific Lutheran (93-47) and Linfield (70-56). The team scores 70.6 points per game. Ayisat Afolabi leads the squad with 14.1 ppg and 10.3 rebounds per game. Afolabi's rebound average leads the NWC.
