Loggers Fly Past Cardinals, 22-1
TACOMA, Wash. - Facing a young North Central team playing just the third game in their program's history, the Puget Sound Loggers earned the easy win, blowing past the Cardinals, 22-1, in a NCAA Division III women's lacrosse match on Sunday afternoon on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
It took just 14 second for the Loggers to get on the board as Jessica Knight (Portland, Ore./Grant) used a pass from Elizabeth Butt (Eugene, Ore./Sheldon) to give the Loggers a 1-0 lead. It was 5-0 just a few minutes later as Sofia Lama (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Torrey Pines) took advantage of a free-position shot. The Loggers made it a double-digit lead with 15:58 to play in the first half as freshman Kyra Friedell (Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins) score unassisted for a 10-0 Puget Sound lead. The Loggers added six more goals in the first half to take a 16-0 lead into the second period.
In the second period, head coach Liana Halstead switched up her line-up a bit, putting her defensive players on offense and her offensive players on defense. The Loggers scored four more times before the Cardinals finally struck, using a well-placed shot by Natalie Vivacqua to put the score at 20-1. Lama would score two more times in the final four minutes as the Loggers collected the 22-1 victory.
Puget Sound was led by seven goals from Lama, who increased her season total to 29 goals. Erienne Pedersen (El Cerrito, Calif./College Preparatory School) added two goals, as did Cathy Soukup (Los Alamitos, Calif.) and Seraphina Cobeen (East Bay, Calif./Berkeley). Ana Calciano (Farmington, Conn./Miss Porter's School) had an easy day in net, allowing just the one goal and making six saves on the afternoon.
For the Cardinals, Vivacqua finished with the only goal for North Central. Elise Manzie made 11 saves for NCC, allowing the 22 Logger goals to take the loss.
The Loggers head down to Oregon next week, facing off against Whittier in a neutral site contest on Sunday at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore.
