#5 Loggers Chop Down Bearcats, 5-0

SALEM, Ore. - Collecting their fourth straight shutout in Northwest Conference play, the fifth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers used their potent offense to defeat the host Willamette Bearcats, 5-0, in a NWC women's soccer match on Saturday afternoon in Salem, Ore.

The Loggers (9-1, 7-0 NWC) first got on the board in the 34th minute when Melissa Abellanida (Pukalani, Hawaii/King Kekaulike) following the corner kick from Fiona Gornick (Portland, Ore./Grant) as Puget Sound took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Logger offense broke it open.  Just 1:47 into the second half, freshman Jenny Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) made it 2-0 after firing in a shot from point blank in front of the net.  Less than a minute after Moore's goal, Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) took a pass from Mikaela Freeman (Alameda, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) and shot from right to left and into the net for a 3-0 Logger lead.

In the 69th minute, Levien made it 4-0 after scoring unassisted from just three yards out.  The Loggers scored their final goal with just 59 seconds remaining when Freeman took the corner from Gornick and fired off a shot from just four yards out.

Both Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) and Katie Wheeler (Sandpoint, Idaho) made two saves each for the Loggers as they shared time in net.  The Loggers outshot the Bearcats 12-6 on the day, including 9-4 in the second half.

Puget Sound wraps up the first half of the NWC season on Sunday when they travel to Lewis & Clark.  Game time with the Pios is set for Noon at Griswold Stadium in Portland, Ore.

A two-time Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Janece is set to leave the women's soccer program as perhaps the best to ever wear the maroon and white. "I chose Puget Sound because I wanted to go to a small school where I could focus on school and have soccer be a priority, but not my life, in case of injury. The people here are very friendly and the campus is beautiful."
