Gornick Named Academic All-American

TACOMA, Wash. - After helping lead the Puget Sound Loggers to their seventh-straight Northwest Conference title, senior midfielder Fiona Gornick (Portland, Ore./Grant) has been named to the Third-Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America women's soccer team.

Gornick, who tallied six goals and eight assists in 2008 while carrying a 3.90 GPA as an exercise science major, is the third women's soccer player to be named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American.  Cortney Kjar was named a second team selection in 2005 and Erin Williams earned third-team honors in the same season. 

Gornick finished her career as the fifth all-time leader is assists for a career with 24 and tied for fifth in career games played with 82.  She was a First Team All-NWC pick and a Second Team All-West Region selection as a junior as she started all 24 games in 2007, leading the Loggers to the Sectional Final. 

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

A two-time Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Janece is set to leave the women's soccer program as perhaps the best to ever wear the maroon and white. "I chose Puget Sound because I wanted to go to a small school where I could focus on school and have soccer be a priority, but not my life, in case of injury. The people here are very friendly and the campus is beautiful."
