Levien Sets Scoring Mark At #1 Loggers Blast Whitman, 6-1

Story by Vince Ghiringhelli, Puget Sound Sports Information

TACOMA, Wash. - Senior forward Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) set the new career goals record with the equalizer right before halftime and the top-ranked Puget Sound Loggers celebrated by scoring five second-half goals to run away with a 6-1 victory over the Whitman Missionaires in a Northwest Conference on Sunday afternoon on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.

Puget Sound (7-0, 4-0) stole the show in the second half, but the resilient Missionaries (2-5-1, 1-4) struck early and earned the only goal on the Loggers all season. For the latter part of the first half, Whitman held the 1-0 lead, until senior Janece Levien (Portland, Ore.) tied the game with an unassisted goal in the 44th minute that gave her 59 career goals and pushed her ahead of 2005 national player of the year Cortney Kjar.

Sophomore Mikaela Freeman (Alameda, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) gave the Loggers the lead in the 48th minute on an assist from Melissa Abellanida (Pukalani, Hawaii/King Kekaulike) and then Levien scored two more, both assisted by Freeman, as the Loggers began to pull out of reach.

Sophomore Rochel Burke (Selah, Wash.) scored an unassisted goal just shortly after entering the game as a sub in the 71st minute and then freshman Gabrielle Duhl (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) took the assist from her former high school teammate Freeman to give the Loggers the 6-1 victory.

Senior goalkeeper Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/skyline) had one save on the day, and allowed one goal as the Loggers outshot the Missionaries, 29-4, including 15-0 in the second half.

The Loggers return to action Wednesday to take on Pacific Lutheran in Parkland, Wash. and return home Sunday to meet George Fox.
