Levien Scores Game Winner In Overtime to Keep #2 Loggers Perfect
WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Senior Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) scored the game winner in the third minute of overtime to keep the second-ranked Puget Sound Loggers undefeated on the 2009 season with a 2-1 victory over the Whitman Missionaries on Saturday in Walla Walla, Wash.
The second-ranked Loggers got on the scoreboard just before halftime as Mikaela Freeman (Alameda, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) fed the ball into Abby Goss (Spokane, Wash./University), who put the ball in net for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 Puget Sound lead.
Whitman evened it up in the 54th minute when Corina Gabbert took a pass from Liz Forbes and fired the ball over Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah) to tie the game at 1-1. With the remainder of the game scoreless, the Loggers entered overtime for the first time in 2009.
In the extra time, sophomore Jenny Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) got the ball into Levien, who simply chipped the ball over the head of Courtney Porter for the game winner.
The Loggers outshot Whitman, 28-10, on the day, forcing Porter to make nine saves on the afternoon. The Loggers also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks while Whitman was called for 20 fouls, compared with 11 for visiting Puget Sound.
The Loggers will head up to Spokane on Sunday for a matchup with Whitworth, beginning at Noon on Whitworth Soccer Field.
