#4 Loggers Rain Supreme To Capture NWC Title

TACOMA, Wash. - With the clouds raining down, the fourth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers reigned supreme, clinching their eight-straight Northwest Conference title with a 2-0 win over the Pacific Boxers in a NWC women's soccer match on Friday on East Athletic Field in Tacoma, Wash.

After a scoreless first half, the Loggers started scoring just about the time that the rains converged over the pitch.  Puget Sound made it a 1-0 game in the 52nd minute when sophomore Christine Isabella (Salt Lake City, Utah/Winthrop) got up and got a head on a corner kick by Mikaela Freeman (Alameda, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) and the header found the back of the net.  The assist by Freeman gave her 13 for the season, which is just one shy of the school record.

The Loggers made it 2-0 in the 77th minute when freshman Maddy Fisk (Corvallis, Ore.) fed a ball into the box and a senior Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) fed it over to sophomore Theresa Henle (Issaquah, Wash.), who turned and fired the ball in for her sixth goal of the season.  The Loggers dominated the game from the beginning, out shooting the Boxers by a tally of 29-4.

Pacific keeper Brittany Hartmann had a busy day, making 12 saves but allowing the two Logger goals.  Senior Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) made just one save on the match to collect the clean sheet.

With the victory, the Loggers clinch at least a share of their eighth straight NWC title and with it, the conference's automatic qualification in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.

The Loggers will conclude the 2009 regular season on Saturday when they take on Linfield, beginning at 11:00 a.m. on East Athletic Field in Tacoma, Wash.

A two-time Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Janece is set to leave the women's soccer program as perhaps the best to ever wear the maroon and white. "I chose Puget Sound because I wanted to go to a small school where I could focus on school and have soccer be a priority, but not my life, in case of injury. The people here are very friendly and the campus is beautiful."
