Isabella's Hat Trick Leads Loggers To NWC Win
TACOMA, Wash. – Senior Christine Isabella (Salt Lake City, Utah) recorded the first hat trick of the season for the Puget Sound women's soccer team and the first of her career in a 4-0 victory in the Northwest Conference opener vs. Willamette on East Field Saturday afternoon.
The Loggers improved to 3-1-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play and Willamette fell to 1-4-0, 0-1.
Isabella started the day with the assist on the game-winning goal by Hannah Hawkins in the 21st minute. It was the first goal of Hawkins' career, a sophomore defender from Everett, Wash. She scored on a rebound off a corner kick.
The Loggers struck again just five minutes letter as Isabella hit it into the left corner on an assist by freshman Maddie Janssen (Lakewood, Colo.).
Mikaela Freeman, a senior from Alameda, Calif., served up the third assist of the day as Isabella scored from the left side as the ball was misplayed by the Bearcats' goalkeeper Nicole Price in the 68th minute.
The final Logger goal came in the 81st minute as Isabella connected with the ball off a rebound.
The Loggers out-shot the Bearcats 26-4 and had 12 shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Casey Thayer (Boulder, Colo.) improved to 3-1-0 in goal, getting the combined shutout with sophomore Kara Merfeld (Bellingham, Wash.). Merfeld played the final 16 minutes and made the only save in the game for Puget Sound.
Puget Sound faces Linfield at noon on East Field on Sunday.
