SPOKANE, Wash. – The Puget Sound women's soccer team fell 2-1 to No. 4 Wheaton on Saturday to conclude the Whitworth Soccer Classic. Amalia Acorda-Fey scored her third goal of the year but the Loggers fell to 1-2 in the young season.
The Wheaton duo of Ally Witt and Leah DeMoss proved to be just enough to send Wheaton home with a win. DeMoss scored both goals for the fourth-ranked Thunder (5-0) with Witt also assisting on both.
All three goals came in the first half. DeMoss scored the first goal in the 38th minute from the top of the box. Acorda-Fey drew the Loggers even when she swooped up a rebound from her previously blocked shot and found the back of the net in the 42nd minute. The tie game didn't last long as DeMoss struck for a second time two minutes later when she headed in Witt's cross.
Casey Thayer made six saves in goal for the Loggers, including four in the first half. The Loggers also proved to challenge late with three shots on goal in the second half but Hilary Barreto was there to make the saves for the Thunder and secure the win.
The Loggers are back home next week for a 4 p.m. Thursday match with Pacific Lutheran. The match will be the NWC opener for both teams.
