FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Theresa Henle scored just over one minute into overtime to give the Puget Sound women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Pacific on Sunday. Kara Merfeld made three saves in the shutout and the Loggers held a 17-8 shot advantage in the match.
After 90 scoreless minutes, the Loggers (7-3-1, 6-1-1 NWC) and Boxers (5-4-3, 3-4-1 NWC) went into an extra period to decide the match. The Loggers had a trip to the top of the NWC standings on the line as a win would tie them with Whitworth going into the second round of conference play.
Just 1:28 into the extra period, Kylie Beeson took a corner kick – the Loggers sixth of the day – and found Theresa Henle in the box. Henle headed it in past the keeper to give the Loggers the win and the share of first in the NWC.
The goal was Henle's third of the year while Beeson dished out her league-leading fourth assist.
The win now sets up a showdown of first place teams on Saturday. The Loggers will host Whitworth at noon in a crucial Northwest Conference matchup.
