Loggers Drop Season Opener

TACOMA, Wash. - With seven freshman on the roster, the Puget Sound Loggers opened the 2009 season a bit timid, falling to the Pacific Boxers, 7-2, in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Friday afternoon at the UPS Tennis Pavilion in Tacoma, Wash.

Pacific took the early lead by sweeping all three doubles matches.  The Loggers nearly got one in the third spot, but the team of Devin Fields (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) and Ashley Dombrow (Lake Forest, Ill./The Ethel Walker School) fell to Stephanie Velligas and Dawn Greene, 9-7.

In singles play, the Loggers collected victories at the number three and four spots.  In the third position, freshman Madison Holtz (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) defeated Dayna Wong, 6-1, 6-3.  In the fourth spot, freshman Ada Yu (Salem, Ore./McKay) defeated Jaime Yoshino, 6-3, 7-6.

The Loggers will be in action again on Saturday when they play host to NWC-power Linfield in a match scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. in the UPS Tennis Pavilion in Tacoma, Wash.
