#18 Loggers Sweep Past Bucs, 3-0

TACOMA, Wash. - It took a set to warm up but once they did, the 18th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers were in control, sweeping past the Whitworth Pirates, 26-24, 25-23, 25-19, in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday night at Stadium High School in Tacoma, Wash.

In the first set, both teams had a bit of trouble warming up as both Whitworth and UPS had their share of attack errors.  With the set going back and forth, the Loggers eventually outlasted the Bucs, 26-24, to take the initial 1-0 match lead.  The Loggers hit just .057 in the first frame while the Pirates hit .097.

In the second set, the Loggers got out to a quick 10-5 lead but the Pirates fought back, eventually tying the set at 17-17 but a late Puget Sound push gave them the 25-23 set win and a 2-set lead heading into the break.  Both teams hit considerably better in the second set, as the Loggers put down 19 kills with just four attack errors on 46 attacks for a .326 mark while the Bucs had 12 kills and just two attack errors on 45 attempts for a .222 hitting percentage.

In the games final set, the teams played tight for the first half but the Loggers used a three-point swing to go from 11-10 to 14-10 and they continued to chip away as they took the match-clincher, 25-19.  UPS hit .237 in the final frame, compared with .105 for the visiting Bucs.

The Loggers were led by 12 kills each from Lindsey Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) and Kalli Kamphaus (Manson, Wash.).  Natalie Monro (Eagle, Idaho) added 10 kills while senior setting Jamee Fred (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) added 37 assists on the night.

Whitworth was led by 7 kills each from Nikki Bardwell and Ka'ipo Rocha.  Bree Riddle and Jordon Hoffnagle each had 12 assists while sharing setting duties.

The Loggers will wrap up the home portion of their schedule on Saturday when they play host to Whitman.  The match with the Missionaries is set for 6:00 p.m. at Stadium High School in Tacoma, Wash.

After appearing in 50 sets during her freshman season, Erika is expected to be among the top players in the conference during her sophomore season but she is enjoying her time off the court as well. "My favorite classes have been my math classes with both James Bernhard and Sigrun Bodine. I love the commitment and passion that they put into teaching high levels of math."
