Bruins Scratch Past #22 Loggers, 3-1

TACOMA, Wash. - Using an incredible 11-0 run in the final frame, the George Fox Bruins collected the upset victory, defeating the 22nd-ranked Puget Sound Loggers, 25-23, 22-25, 25-15, 25-16, in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday evening at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.

In the first set, both teams came out firing as George Fox took advantage of three Logger service errors to squeak out a 25-23 set one victory.  The Bruins were led in the first fram but four kills on four attempts by Kaitlyn Maddams.

In the second frame, both squads cooled off a bit on the attack but the Loggers used an impressive 5.5 kills in the second set alone to collect a 25-22 victory and knot the match at one set apiece.  Kalli Kamphaus (Manson, Wash.) collected five kills on the set, as well as three blocks, to help the Loggers get even.

Coming out of the break, the Bruins were on the prowl, putting up a match-high 17 kills while hitting .295 to put themselves in good position.  On the other side of the net, the Loggers struggled, putting up eight kills but committing five attack errors on 44 attempts to hit just .068 as GFU collect the 25-15 set three victory.

In the fourth set, it looked briefly like the Loggers might be in control as Puget Sound built and early 4-1 lead.  The Bruins then awoke from their brief hibernation, putting together 11 straight points to take a 15-4 lead and the Loggers couldn't get back in the match as George Fox collected the four-set victory with a 25-16 set four victory.

The Loggers were led by 12 kills each from Kamphaus and Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho).  Senior Stephanie Harvey (Yakima, Wash./Eisenhower) put up 33 assists while senior Leigh Sumida (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Iolani) dug out 29 balls on the match.

George Fox was led by 13 kills from Eliza Pledger.  Ali Toedtemeier chipped in 41 assists and 19 digs while Jennifer Panico dealt out three service aces.

The Loggers hit the road next week, traveling down to Lewis & Clark on Friday and Pacific on Saturday.

After appearing in 50 sets during her freshman season, Erika is expected to be among the top players in the conference during her sophomore season but she is enjoying her time off the court as well. "My favorite classes have been my math classes with both James Bernhard and Sigrun Bodine. I love the commitment and passion that they put into teaching high levels of math."
