#23 Loggers Pound Past Pios in Portland, 3-0

PORTLAND, Ore. - Senior Kalli Kamphaus (Manson, Wash.) put up 10 kills and five blocks as the 23rd-ranked Puget Sound Loggers swept past the Lewis & Clark Pioneers, 25-22, 25-18, 26-24, in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday evening in Portland, Ore.

In the first set, the Pioneers and Loggers seemingly traded points early before L&C pulled ahead by as many as four points, leading 19-15, before the Loggers began to come back.  Down 20-17, the Loggers scored four straight points to pull ahead 21-20.  An attack error by Margaret Dowling and a service ace from Katie Regan (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) gave the Loggers a 25-22 victory in set one.

In the second set, the Pios again got off to a lead, forcing the Loggers to play from behind. Down 13-19, Puget Sound got the set even at 15 points each, eventually taking an 18-15 lead following a seven-point run.  The Loggers continued to pull away, eventually taking the second set by a final of 25-18 to pull within one frame of the victory.

The final set saw the visiting Loggers play to an early lead but the Pios kept it close.  With the scored tied 13-13, the Loggers put together five straight points to pull ahead 18-13 but L&C did not give up, eventually pulling even at 21.  The set would be tied again at 24 but a kill by Sophie DeWitt (Astoria, Ore.) and an attack error by L&C's Jessamy Holland would clinch the match for the Loggers with a 26-24 set three win.

The Loggers were led by 10 kills each from Kamphaus and DeWitt.  Senior Stephanie Harvey (Yakima, Wash./Eisenhower) added 28 assists in the victory as the Loggers hit .202 with seven blocks on the night.

Lewis & Clark was led by 10 kills from Katherine Fiedler and nine from Margaret Dowling.  Leia Matsunaga added 30 assists in the loss while the Pios were credited with eight team blocks, including six by Sarah Hall.

The Loggers will look to go 2-0 on the weekend on Saturday night when they travel to Forest Grove, Ore. to take on Pacific.

After appearing in 50 sets during her freshman season, Erika is expected to be among the top players in the conference during her sophomore season but she is enjoying her time off the court as well. "My favorite classes have been my math classes with both James Bernhard and Sigrun Bodine. I love the commitment and passion that they put into teaching high levels of math."
