#14 Loggers Take Second At Colorado College Invitational
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Still adjusting to the 6,000-feet change in elevation, the 14th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers took second at the Colorado College Invitational, defeating McMurry in five sets before falling to the host Tigers on Saturday in Reid Gymnasium in Colorado Springs, Colo.
In their first match, the Loggers took on McMurry and their opponents from Texas gave them a fight. After picking up a 25-22 win in the first set, the Loggers fell 25-15 in the second set and then 25-23 to fall behind after the third set. In the fourth set, the Loggers put together a 25-20 victory to force the fifth set and a 15-12 fifth set win was enough to give the Loggers their sixth win of 2009.
In the final match of the tournament, the Loggers took on 15th-ranked Colorado College in the de facto championship match and the Tigers controlled the match from the first serve. The first set stayed close for awhile as the two teams found themselves tied at 11-11 but Colorado College used an 11-4 run to pull way ahead and CC eventually collected the 25-19 set one win.
In the second set, the Tigers went up 7-2 and the Loggers could never find a way back in as Colorado College cruised to the 25-12 victory and Puget Sound would prove to have just run out of gas as CC clinched the match with a 25-17 victory in set three to sweep the match.
Against Colorado College, the Loggers were led by nine kills from Bre Boyce (Kent, Wash./Kentwood). The Loggers hit just .010 against CC, putting down 24 kills but committing 23 attack errors on 102 total attempts. Individual statistics were not immediately available for the match against McMurry.
The Loggers will return to Tacoma on Friday to open the Northwest Conference season against Pacific.
