GEORGETOWN, Texas – It was a tremendous test against one of the best teams in the country, but the Puget Sound volleyball team lost at No. 3 Southwestern (Tex.) on Saturday, 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-16).
The Loggers (3-4) opened the first set ready to challenge the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) third-best team in NCAA D-III. A kill from Alli Reviglio gave the Loggers an 11-10 edge, but the Pirates (7-0) went on a 7-1 run to take a 17-12 lead.
Kills by Kristen Miguel and Katie Rice, coupled with a pair of Southwestern errors, brought the Loggers to within 18-17. The Pirates increased their lead to 21-17, and Puget Sound still would not quit. Southwestern committed a service error, then Miguel and Rita Dexter followed with kills to make it a 21-20 first set.
The Pirates appeared poised to close out the set when they had a 24-22 lead, but Dexter and Erica Smith came through with consecutive kills to even the score. Southwestern scored the next two points to win, 26-24.
The Pirates claimed the following to sets, 25-17, 25-16.
Dexter led the Loggers with seven kills, and Moira McVicar chipped in 17 assists. Puget Sound committed fewer errors (14) than Southwestern (16).
Dexter and Katie Rice were both named to the Southwestern All-Tournament Team.
The Loggers open their Northwest Conference schedule at home against Whitman on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m.
