Loggers open NWC season in Memorial Fieldhouse this weekend

TACOMA, Washington – Back from a three-game stand in Texas, the Puget Sound volleyball team opens its Northwest Conference schedule in Memorial this weekend. The Loggers host Whitman on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. bout against Whitworth on Saturday, Sept. 16.

Through the fire

The Loggers' non-conference competition included three teams that are currently ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25: Southwestern (No. 2), St. Thomas (No. 23), and Christopher Newport (No. 24).

 

The Lone Star fight

Puget Sound posted a 1-2 record in a tournament hosted by Southwestern (Tex.), Sept. 8-9, in Georgetown, Texas. The Loggers beat East Texas Baptist, 3-2, but lost to No. 24 Christopher Newport and No. 2 Southwestern (Tex.).

 

Dexter's laboratory

Rita Dexter ranks fifth in the NWC with a .354 hitting percentage, and her 62 kills rank 10th.

 

Setting the table

Moira McVicar is fourth in the NWC with 8.35 assists per set. She totaled an astounding 58 assists during the Loggers' win over East Texas Baptist.

 

Preseason predictions

NWC head coaches predict the Loggers to finish third in the league, according to the preseason poll. Whitworth is favored to win its fourth consecutive NWC title, and Pacific Lutheran is expected to place second.

 

Scouting Whitman (0-4, 0-0 NWC)

The Blues have yet to win a set through four matches this season, though they have faced stiff competition. Whitman has gone up against several teams currently ranked in the top 25: No. 1 Calvin, No. 7 Trinity (Tex.), and No. 17 Cal Lutheran.

 

Scouting Whitworth (3-5, 0-0 NWC)

The Pirates posted a 2-2 record in the Oregon Trail Classic, picking up wins over Montana Western and Schreiner. Whitworth had a tougher showing in the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational, going 1-3 with a win over Pomona-Pitzer. The Pirates have faced two teams that are in the national ranks: No. 8 Claremont-M-S and No. 17 Cal Lutheran.
