Puget Sound's bats come to life in 14-4 win at George Fox

NEWBERG, Oregon – The Logger bats came as the Puget Sound baseball team beat George Fox, 14-4, in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Loggers lost the first game, 5-4.

The Loggers (13-15, 11-8 NWC) scored double-digit runs for the eighth time this season as the Northwest Conference's second-leading offense (194 runs) handedly beat the Bruins (14-17, 10-8 NWC), 14-4.

Johnny Hosmer (1-for-3, HR) hit his first-career home run in the seventh inning – a solo shot that gave Puget Sound a 12-4 edge.

Puget Sound and George Fox each scored two runs in the first inning, but the Loggers broke it open with four runs in the second. Layne Croney (2-for-5, R, RBI) led off with a single and advanced to third base on a field miscue. Cal Muramaru (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI) knocked him with a single to right field, and Connor Savage (4-for-6, 3 R, 2B, SB) followed with a single to short.

Nickolas Alarcio's (3-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B) double scored Muramaru and put two runners in scoring position for Chris Zerio (3-for-4, 3 R, 2 RBI), who lifted a sac fly to center, allowing Savage to score. Bobby Hosmer (3-for-5, RBI) then reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop, as Alarcio easily scored the inning's fourth run.

The Bruins began to chip away with two runs in the third inning, cutting the Loggers' lead to 6-4. However, Puget Sound rallied for three runs in the fourth. Savage hit a double in the stanza, while Zerio and Nathan Backes (1-for-4, R, 2 RBI, 2B) each collected RBIs.

Alarcio's RBI single scored one of two runs in the Loggers' sixth inning, while Nick Funyak and Croney eached collected RBI hits in the eighth inning.

Joshua Zavisubin improved to 2-0 after allowing just one hit in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.

The Loggers and Bruins appeared to be heading into extra innings when Puget Sound recorded two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning with the game tied, 4-4. However, a single followed by a double gave George Fox the walk-off, 5-4 victory.

The Bruins claimed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Johnny Hosmer's (1-for-2, 2 RBI) sac fly to score his brother, Bobby Hosmer (3-for-5 2 R, 2B) evened the score, 1-1, in the second frame. Puget Sound took a 2-1 lead in the third when Chris Zerio (0-for-5, RBI) knocked in Connor Savage (0-for-3, R) with a groundout to the pitcher. George Fox quickly responded to even the score in the bottom of the frame.

Johnny Hosmer's RBI single to Nathan Backes (1-for-2, R) in the fourth gave Puget Sound a one-run lead, but the Bruins struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.

Troy Kakugawa's (2-for-3, RBI) single in the eighth inning plated Bobby Hosmer to even the score, 4-4. Hosmer reached base with his seventh double of the season. 

The Loggers host Willamette for a makeup doubleheader on Tuesday, April 7, at 12 p.m.
