McMINNVILLE, OregonIan Hughes homered twice as the Puget Sound baseball team split a doubleheader against Willamette (hosted by Linfield) on Sunday afternoon. The Loggers remain on the upswing after winning their second consecutive Northwest Conference series win.

Nickolas Alarcio hit third home run of the year, and Hughes cleared the outfield fences for the first time this season, but the Loggers lost the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Bearcats, 8-4.

Alarcio led off the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run left field, cutting Puget Sound's deficit to 3-2. Two batters later, Hughes his a solo home run of his own to left.

Willamette bounced back quickly, however, with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Loggers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Layne Croney hit a one-out double and Chris Zerio followed with single to put runners on the corners for Nick Funyak. The Logger catcher smacked an RBI single through the right side to sore Croney.

Willamette scored two runs in the second and another in the third, before the two Puget Sound home runs tied the game.

Hughes stayed hot with his second home run of the day as the Loggers beat the Bearcats, 8-6.

Hughes broke a scoreless tie with a leadoff solo homer to left field in the top of the fifth inning. The Loggers added to their lead with three runs in the sixth inning.

Zerio began the two-out rally with a single up the middle, and the second baseman promptly stole second base. Funyak followed with an RBI single down the leftfield line, and Nathan Backes belted a two-run homer to give the Loggers a 4-0 lead.

Zerio blasted his first home run of the year - a three-run shot - for good measure in the top of the ninth. The second baseman's dinger was his fourth hit of the game.

Puget Sound starting pitcher Eric Crispell earned his second win of the season after allowing just one run through 5.2 innings.

The Loggers host Pacific Lutheran on Wednesday, March 16, for a non-conference game at 3 p.m.
