The Loggers' big fourth inning leads to a 12-1 win over the Lutes

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound baseball team scored seven runs in the fourth inning as the Loggers topped Pacific Lutheran, 12-1, during a non-conference matinee on Logger Baseball Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Loggers (9-11) and Lutes (10-11) were tied, 1-1, entering the fourth stanza. Nick Funyak led off with a double down the right-field line, and he advanced to third base on Nathan Backes' deep fly out to centerfield. Ben Jones followed with a base on balls, and James Dejesus came through with an RBI single to score Funyak.

Jordan Hirae earned a walk to load the bases for Ryan Moyes. The left fielder delivered with a two-run single to right-center as the Loggers claimed a 4-1 lead. Alex Sierra was hit by a pitch to load the bases once more, this time for Chris Zerio.

Zerio's groundball was bobbled by the shortstop, who tried to turn two. After flipping the ball to second, the second baseman sailed a throw over the catcher's head trying to get Hirae out at the plate. Moyes sprinted home on the errant throw and the Loggers went up, 6-1. Moyes finished the game with a season-best three RBI.

Funyak, who has been an RBI machine all season, capped off the big inning with a two-run single to left field. The senior catcher finished with three RBI on the afternoon, adding to his team-high total of 21

The Loggers got on the board in the first inning after Sierra singled and moved to third on Nickolas Alarcio's double. Funyak lifted a sac fly to centerfield, plating Sierra and giving Puget Sound an early 1-0 lead. Funyak hit 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.

The Lutes answered back when Tyler Thompson hit a solo home run in the top of the second.

Alarcio's two-run single in the seventh inning highlighted a three-run rally late in the game. He finished 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

Puget Sound hosts Whitworth for three games this weekend, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19, at 12 p.m.
