Loggers prepare for familiar foes in non-conference action

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound baseball returns to the diamond in Wilsonville, Oregon, this weekend to take on three familiar foes in non-conference competition. The three-game weekend begins on Saturday, Feb. 11, with an 11 a.m. bout against Whitworth. Puget Sound takes on Willamette shortly after the Whitworth game. The weekend concludes on Sunday with a 5 p.m. game against Lewis & Clark.

Born to run

The Loggers have not been shy on the base paths through the first four games of the 2017 season. Puget Sound has six steals in eight attempts so far. James Dejesus leads the team with two swipes. Cal Muramaru, Layne Croney, and Jack Gries each have one stolen base.

 

Fresh help

A couple of Puget Sound freshman were impressive in their first weekend of collegiate competition. Nolan Wiler is 4-for-8 with two runs and a double through his first three games of the season. Joe Brennan made his Logger debut on the mound at Whittier (Feb. 5), and he allowed just one earned run through five innings while striking out five.

 

Scouting Whitworth (0-0)

The Pirates' first four scheduled games of the season were postponed last week. Whitworth is favored to repeat as the Northwest Conference champions, according to the preseason poll of conference head coaches. The Loggers went 1-5 against the Pirates in 2016.

 

Scouting Willamette (2-2)

The Bearcats opened the season with a pair of wins at Whittier. However, Willamette's three-game series (Feb. 3-4) against the Poets ended with a loss. Willamette then played at Pomona-Pitzer (Feb. 5), where the Sagehens trounced the Bearcats, 17-0. Willamette is hitting .309 this season, While Connor Bailey, Jack Brett, and Cole Pursell have each gone yard once this season. The pitching staff enters the weekend with a 9.56 ERA.

 

Scouting Lewis & Clark (0-0)

The Pioneers' first three scheduled games of the season were postponed last week. Lewis & Clark is expected to finish last in the NWC, according to the preseason poll of conference head coaches. The Loggers and Pioneers split their four head-to-head games in 2016.
