TACOMA, Washington – Merle Rowan-Kennedy continued to dominate on the mound while James Dejesus, Matt Shelhamer, Mason Quinlan homered as the Puget Sound baseball team split a doubleheader at home against Whitworth on Saturday afternoon.
Puget Sound 7, Whitworth 9 (11 inn.)
The Loggers (9-11, 5-7 NWC) trailed, 5-4, entering the home half of the fifth inning, but Puget Sound put up three runs to take a 7-5 edge.
James Dejesus led off the bottom of the fifth inning with his first home run of the year. Mason Quinlan then reached base with a one-out single, and Nick Ultsch followed with a double to left-center field. Ricardo Barraza scored both runners with a single to centerfield.
Puget Sound carried its two-run led into the ninth inning, but Whitworth (13-10, 6-8 NWC) rallied four two runs to send the game into extras. The Pirates got two mores in the 11th inning to seal the win.
Puget Sound was behind by two runs until it posted four runs in the second inning. Barraza smacked an RBI single, and three Loggers scored on two errors in the stanza.
Barraza finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI. Quinlan, Ultsch, and Hunter Riley collected two hits, apiece.
Puget Sound 4, Whitworth 1
Rowan-Kennedy allowed only four hits and two walks while striking out five. Through his last four starts (28 IP), Rowan-Kennedy has a 1.93 ERA and two wins.
Whitworth got on the board in the second inning, but the Loggers tied things up in the fifth inning thanks to Matt Shelhmer's first home run of the season. The following inning, Mason Quinlan launched a two-run homer run – his first of the season – to give Puget Sound a 3-1 lead.
Ian Hugh's sac fly to score Layne Croney in the eighth inning was the game's final run.
Quinlan finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, and Cal Muramaru went 2-for-2.
The Loggers and Pirates conclude their three-game series on Sunday, March 26, at 12 p.m.
