Three-game series at Willamette begins Sunday

TACOMA, Washington – The postseason race keeps getting tighter, and the Puget Sound baseball team has three important Northwest Conference games at Willamette, starting with a doubleheader Sunday, April 8, at 8 p.m.

Just how close is it?

One game separates six teams in the Northwest Conference. Both Linfield and Whitman are tied for second place in the NWC with a 10-8 lead record. Willamette, Puget Sound, and Whitworth are all tied with 9-9 NWC records. George Fox has a 10-9 league mark.


Lift off

Nick Ultsch slugged his team-leading fourth home run of the season during the Loggers' 10-8 NWC win at Pacific Lutheran, April 2. Ultsch is tied for eighth in the NWC in home runs, tied for seventh in RBI (30), and he ranks second in slugging percentage (.651).


Ripe rookie

Freshman Kyle Strash is the NWC's second-leading hitter with a .381 batting average, and his .500 on-base percentage is also second in the league. Strash has reached base safely in 20 of his last 21 games,


Warnick wins

Puget Sound starting pitcher Michael Warnick won his third consecutive game, 7-2, against Whitman (March 31). He was subsequently named the Logger of the Week. Warnick has the conference's best record (6-1), and he has a 2.34 ERA in his last three outings (19.2 IP).

Scouting Willamette (17-14, 9-9 NWC)

The Bearcats have alternated wins and losses in each of their last six games. Willamette won two out of three games at first-place Pacific Lutheran last weekend. Willamette's 4.07 ERA ranks second in the NWC, but the pitching staff as surrendered the most home runs (23) in the conference. Connor Bailey is the team's leading hitter (.325), and he also leads Willamette in home runs (7). Perry Van Eckhardt leads the Bearcats in stolen bases with 11.
