LAKEWOOD, Wash. - With the women improving by one stroke and the men holding off rival Pacific Lutheran, the Puget Sound Loggers took second place on both sides of the Northwest Conference North Golf Tournament at Oakbrook Country Club in Lakewood, Wash.
In the women's tournament, the Loggers were led by a second round 86 from Emily Leong (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte). Megan Starr (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) also shot sub-90, finishing the second round with an 89 to shoot 179 for the tournament. Maresa Jenson (Whitefish, Mont.) led the Loggers over the 36-hole event, shooting a 91 on Monday to finish tied for fifth with a 177.
Whitworth won the women's team title with a 353 on day two to finish 19 strokes ahead of Puget Sound with a two-day total of 696. The Loggers were second at 715, followed by Whitman (717) and Pacific Lutheran (768). Tate Head of Whitman and Emily Travis of Whitworth tied for medalist honors, carding 26-over 171 for the tournament.
On the men's side, the Loggers were led by a nine-over 151 from Jordan Hodge (Tucson, Ariz.), who struggled a bit on the second day but was able to rely on a one-under 70 from Sunday. Greg Kirkpatrick (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris) has the best round of the day for the Loggers, carding a five-over 76 to finish in seventh place with a two-day 155. Teammate Marc Phillips (Boise, Idaho/Timberline) finished one stroke back of Kirkpatrick, carding a 156 for the tournament, including a 79 on Monday.
Whitworth used consistent play to collect team honors with rounds of 305 on both days to finish 13 strokes ahead of Puget Sound. The Loggers were second at 623, followed by Pacific Lutheran (629) and Whitman (631). Brian Barton of Whitman took medalist honors, using round of 75 and 74 to shoot a seven-over 149 and finish two-strokes ahead of Hodge.
The Loggers will be action again beginning on Saturday when they travel to Portland for the NWC Fall Classic at Heron Lakes GC, hosted by Lewis & Clark.
