Logger Men Fifth, Women Eighth At NWC Spring Classic

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Puget Sound men's golf team dropped into fifth and the women's golf team stayed in eighth at the NWC Spring Classic on Sunday. Nick Kelley led the way for the men with a 9-0ver 153 for the tournament while Ev Grier and Melissa Merrigan led the women's team.

The Loggers dropped from fourth to fifth in the second day of the men's NWC Spring Classic as they shot a 322 (+34). Linfield, who was in fifth after day one, shot an 11-over 299 to take the title and first place in the NWC standings. The Loggers are now in third place behind Linfield and Whitman. Whitman took second, followed by Whitworth in third and Pacific Lutheran in fourth. George Fox was sixth and Willamette took seventh. Pacific and Lewis & Clark rounded out the team scoring in eighth and ninth, respectively.

Kelley's 9-over 153 paced the Loggers as he had the team's low score on each day of the tournament to finish eighth. Adam Bean was 13th with a 155 (+11) while Riley Conlin finished 14th with a 157 (+13). Matt Kitto rounded out the Logger scoring with a 17-over 161 for the two-day tournament.

Grier and Merrigan were each 56-over from the tournament to finish 33rd. Carrie Eidsness shot a 244 (+80) and Madison Cox rounded out the Logger scoring with a 233 (+89).

George Fox took the women's title to add to their lead in the NWC standings. Whitman followed in second and Whitworth was third. Linfield came in fourth, Willamette came in fifth and Pacific Lutheran finished sixth. Pacific was just ahead of the Loggers in seventh while Lewis & Clark finished ninth.

Both Logger teams will take the next three weeks to train for the NWC Championships on Apr. 20-21.


Day One Recap

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Puget Sound golf teams completed the first round of the NWC Spring Classic on Saturday with the men's team in fourth of a tight-knit leaderboard and the women's team in eighth.

Four teams are within five strokes of the leader on the men's side. Pacific Lutheran leads the field with a 299 (+11). Whitman is one stroke off the leaders followed by Whitworth, who is 13-over. The Loggers shot a 304 (+16) to round out the top-4. Linfield was 22-over in fifth.

Nick Kelley leads the Loggers individually with a 3-over 75. Adam Bean and Riley Conlin were each 5-over for the Loggers.

On the women's side, Ev Grier and Melissa Merrigan each lead the Loggers with a 27-over 99 in the first round.

Both NWC Spring Classic tournaments finish up tomorrow in Walla Walla.
