TACOMA, Wash. – The new year is upon us and Logger fans won't have to wait long to see the Loggers in action in 2012. Both Logger basketball teams will take to the hardwood in Memorial Fieldhouse this weekend as they reopen their Northwest Conference schedules.
Whitman will visit on Friday with the women's teams taking the court at 6 p.m. and the men's teams following at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the doubleheader will have an early start with the women's game tipping at 4 p.m. and the men's game following at 6 p.m.
The men are still ranked 16th in the D3hoops.com poll with a 10-1 overall record and a 2-0 record in the Northwest and will meet two of the NWC's top teams in Whitman and Whitworth this weekend. Both are 2-0 in conference play.
While the Loggers are 16th, Whitworth comes into this weekend ranked 11th in Division III. When the two meet on Saturday, it will be just one of two matchups of ranked teams this week nationwide. Since head coach Justin Lunt took over the program in 2005, the Loggers and Pirates have met four times when both teams were ranked with the Loggers winning all four matchups.
The women's team will also face two quality opponents in Whitman and Whitworth. The Loggers reopen the NWC season with a 2-0 record in conference play. However, they will be looking to end a three-game losing skid that has their overall record at 6-5.
Jocelyn Riordan is just 15 points away from passing former teammate Claire Ely for seventh on the Loggers all-time scoring list.
When the Whits came into town last season, the Loggers played in back-to-back overtime thrillers. Both the Missionaries and Pirates forced overtime but the Loggers responded on both nights to come away with the win.
The action begins at 6 p.m. on Friday in Memorial Fieldhouse when the Loggers take on Whitman. Saturday's doubleheader against Whitworth will begin early at 4 p.m.
