SPOKANE, Washington – The Puget Sound men's basketball team fell to No. 3 Whitworth, 75-58, in a Northwest Conference semifinal on Thursday evening.
Carlos Mancasola, who earned All-NWC Honorable Mention earlier this week, led the Loggers with 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. All-NWC First Teamer Kohl Meyer chipped in 10 points, while Zach Miller had eight points and eight boards.
Whitworth (25-1, 15-1 NWC) and Puget Sound (13-13, 8-8 NWC) met for the second time in six days. The Pirates, who are the number one seed in the conference, began to pull away halfway through the first period. The Loggers trailed, 40-26, at the break. Puget Sound came out of the locker room on a 7-2 run, but the Pirates responded with a 6-1 run of their own, and the visitors were unable to pull closer than 10 points in the remainder of the game.
Puget Sound shot 32.3 percent (20-for-62) from the field, while Whitworth shot 49.2 percent (30-for-61). The Loggers shot 26.9 percent from beyond the arc (7-for-26). The Pirates were 4-for-16 (25.0 percent) when attempting three-pointers, and outrebounded the Loggers 46-31.
