SANTA CRUZ, California – Three Loggers scored in double figures as the Puget Sound men's basketball team earned its first victory of the 2019-20 season with a 72-62 triumph over Caltech in Kaiser Permanente Arena Saturday afternoon.
Stelllan Roberts led all players with 22 points, and freshman Tyrese Yussuf-Willis continued to impress by shooting 3-for-6 from 3-point range on his way to a 14-point night. Freshman Kobe Elsner scored in double digits for the first time in his young career, notching 11 for Puget Sound (1-1).
Neither team led by more than three minutes until a pair of Roberts free-throws gave the Loggers' a 19-14 advantage with 4:32 left in the first half. The Beavers (0-2) kept fighting and cut Puget Sound's lead to 29-28 at halftime.
A 3-pointer by Yussuf-Willis increased Puget Sound's lead to 36-30 two minutes into the second half, but Celtech continued to hang around. The Beavers claimed a 43-38 lead with 12:28 left in the second half. Free-throws by Elsner and Roberts, followed by another Yussuf-Ellis trey, gave Puget Sound a 44-43 edge. The Loggers led for the rest of the game.
Puget Sound shot 45.3-percent from the floor, and its defense limited the Beavers to 37.7-percent.
Puget Sound makes its home debut as part of the McArthur Classic, Nov. 22-23. The Loggers host Warner Pacific and Chapman.
