Softball heads to California to open season

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound softball team heads to Southern California to open the 2017 season this weekend. The Loggers are scheduled to take on Pomona-Pitzer in a doubleheader on Friday, before playing two against Chapman on Saturday. The team will wrap up the opening weekend with a doubleheader against Occidental on Sunday.

Puget Sound in 2016

The 2016 Loggers reached double-digit wins (10) for the first time since 2011. They graduated just one senior, and return seven regular starters. Out of the Loggers' 38 games in the spring, 18 were decided by three runs or less. The Loggers captured wins against three of the four Northwest Conference teams that competed in the postseason. They were 6-0 during their spring break trip to Tucson, Arizona. Erica Gott, now a junior, led Puget Sound with five home runs last season, while Jaci Young, now a senior hit four long balls.

Scouting the Sagehens (1-1)

Pomona-Pitzer College is located in Claremont, California, and the team competes in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. So far this season, the Sagehens split a doubleheader with Pacific Lutheran, falling to the Lutes, 9-0, before winning 5-4. Liz Rodarte has hit a home run, batting .429 in the two games. Alondra Reynoso threw a complete game victory, allowing four runs (two earned) and striking out three. Rodarte took a complete game loss, giving up nine runs (six earned).

Scouting the Panthers

Chapman University is located in Orange, California, and the team competes in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Panthers finished the 2016 season with a 13-25 record, going 7-21 in league games, and hitting .299 over the year. Of the seven players who hit over .300 for the season, five return, including Sydney Engelhardt, who led the squad last year with a .369 average. The Panthers graduated their top pitcher, but return Samantha Whalen, who pitched 89.0 innings a year ago, with a 5.27 ERA.

Scouting the Tigers (1-5)

Occidental College is located in Los Angeles, California, and the team competes in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Tigers are 1-5 so far this season, picking up a victory over Marymount, 4-3, in their most recent game. The team is hitting .228 in six games, led by Nyla Gatison, who is hitting .400 and has four stolen bases. Alexis Funaki (2.86 ERA) and Madison Romero (3.06 ERA) have each thrown a complete game for Occidental, each recording five strikeouts.
