Young and Jessica Gott homer, softball falls to Willamette

TACOMA, Washington – Jaci Young and Jessica Gott hit home runs, but the Puget Sound softball team fell in a resumed game and a doubleheader to Willamette on Saturday afternoon. The Loggers fell, 12-11, in nine innings in the first game which had begun on February 25. The team then fell, 6-4, in the first full game, and 9-2, in the nightcap.

Jaci Young was 4-for-11 in the three games, hitting two home runs, and recording six runs batted in for the Loggers (10-14, 3-10 NWC). Jessica Gott (2-for-11) also hit a home run, while Erica Gott picked up three RBI and Kristi Nagamine had two runs batted in. Amber Popovich, Jessica Shimoda, and Jenna Llamas each had an RBI as well.

Willamette 12, Puget Sound 11 (9 innings)

The Loggers and Bearcats (7-7, 7-5 NWC) began the game on February 25. After Willamette went up 7-0 in the first three innings, Puget Sound scored two runs in the bottom of the third, and seven in the fifth inning – capped by a Jaci Young grand slam – to take a 9-7 lead. The Bearcats scored two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game. At the completion of the seventh inning, dusk was falling, and so the game was suspended due to light.

Both teams were held scoreless in the eighth inning this afternoon. In the ninth inning, the Bearcats scored three runs to take the lead. Puget Sound scored two runs in the bottom of the inning, with RBI by Young and Erica Gott, but the home team was unable to bring any more across, and ultimately fell.

Willamette 6, Puget Sound 4

The Bearcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and tacked two more runs on in the top of the second inning. The Loggers got one run back in the third inning when Mckenna Johnson was hit by a pitch with bases loaded.

Willamette added a run in the fifth inning, but the Loggers battled back in the sixth inning. Puget Sound scored three runs, including one on a home run by Young, to trail by just one run, 5-4. The Bearcats got an extra insurance run in the top of the seventh, and the Loggers were unable to score any in the bottom of the inning.  

Erica Gott (5-5) took the complete game loss for the Loggers, giving up six runs (four earned), while striking out two.

Willamette 9, Puget Sound 2

The visitors scored in the first inning again in the final game of the day. The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead after the first inning, and added a run in the second. Jessica Gott hit a home run to lead off the Loggers' half of the second to narrow the gap to 2-1. In the third inning, Puget Sound would tie the game, 2-2, on a sacrifice fly by Erica Gott.

Willamette would retake the lead in the fourth inning, and add a run to lead 4-2 in the fifth inning. The Bearcats scored five runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding lead which they would not relinquish.

Jessica Gott (2-3) started the game in the circle and took the loss. She allowed six runs (five earned) in 5.0 innings, while striking out three. Kasey Stern allowed three runs (two earned), and Jaci Young threw the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs.   

The Loggers will next host Lewis & Clark on Tuesday, March 28. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
