TACOMA, Wash. - Opening up the Northwest Conference dual season with a little cross-town rivalry, the Puget Sound Loggers swept the Pacific Lutheran Lutes in a NWC dual meet on Friday evening at Wallace Pool in Tacoma, Wash. The Logger men won 120-84 while the Puget Sound women collected a 142-62 victory.
The Loggers first victory came in the first race as Puget Sound earned a near three second victory in the women's 200m medley relay, finishing in a time of 2:06.94. The Lutes barely won the men's 200m medley relay but Kelsey Elizondo (Salt Lake City, Utah/Judge Memorial) gave the Loggers another win in the 800m freestyle, posting an impressing 9:51.89 to win by nearly 17 seconds.
In the women's 200m freestyle, Elizabeth MacAfee (Los Gatos, Calif.) held on for a win with a mark of 2:15.01. Hally Roberts (Boulder, Colo./Kenyon) made it four straight wins for the Logger women, taking the 50m freestyle in a time of 29.21. Freshman Ann Barrington (Lake Oswego, Ore.) collected her first win in the 400m individual medley with a time of 5:29.73.
The Logger men got their first win in the 400m individual medley as Zach Walker (Portland, Ore./Grant) finished just over a second ahead of teammate Maxwell Cohen (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva) with a time of 4:59.78.
Elizondo won her second event of the evening in the 100m butterfly, posting a time of 1:09.25. Freshman Aleksander Jeremic (Skopje, Macedonia/Nova) made it a sweep in the 100 fly, taking the men's race with a time of 59.30.
Ava Williams (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) collected the victory in the 100m freestyle with a time of 1:02.60 to finish almost two seconds ahead of teammate Hannah Vernon (Morgantown, W.Va./University). Senior Jackson Kowalski (Keizer, Ore./McNary) improved his seed time in the 100m backstroke, taking first with a mark of 59.35.
MacAfee won her second event of the evening in the 400m freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:46.78. Jeremic also became a dual-event winner in the 400m freestyle, winning by nearly 18 seconds with at time of 4:30.70.
Sierra Phillips (Cottonwood Heights, Utah/Brighton) continued the Logger dominance, taking the 100m breaststroke by over five seconds with a time of 1:18.11. Junior Garrett Shields (Roseburg, Ore.) was victorious in the men's 100m breast, posting a winning time of 1:10.87.
The Loggers wrapped up the night with a sweep in the 200m freestyle relay as the women won with a time of 1:57.21 and the men were victorious with a time of 1:42.44.
Puget Sound will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when the play host to Willamette in a NWC dual meet set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Wallace Pool in Tacoma, Wash.
