Loggers perform well in Redlands Invitational

REDLANDS, Calif.—The Puget Sound track and field squad had a tremendous showing at the Redlands Invitational Friday night as the squad saw two Top 10 list times and 14 Northwest Conference championship qualifying marks at Redlands, Calif.

Senior Alicia Burns once again had a strong meet for the Loggers, running the 800 meter run in 2:14.94, good for fifth on the Puget Sound top 10 list and the fastest time in Division III so far this season. The mark was also an NWC Championships qualifying mark, but Burns already qualified for the conference meet in the 800 meter run previously in the season.

Meg Gilbertson also saw success for the Loggers, jumping up to eighth on the school's Top 10 list in the 400 meter dash. Her time of 59.69 also was an NWC qualifier, as was her 200 meter dash time of 27.24. Both times in the Redlands Invitational were personal records for Gilbertson. Melissa Motyer also competed in the 200 and 400 meter dashes as well, setting a seasonal best in the 200 meter dash and qualifying for the NWC meet in the 400 meter dash in the process.

Rounding out the NWC qualifiers on the women's side, Sierra Grunwald ran the 1500 meter run in 4:55.11 to meet the standard for the conference meet in that event.

On the men's side, nine Loggers set qualifying marks Friday night as well. The distance runners once again lead the way for Puget Sound as four qualified for the NWC meet, with three of those four qualifying times coming in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Josh Seekatz ran that particular race in 9:48.19, a season best for the junior, to meet the conference standard, while Justin Higa ran a personal best 10:09.96 in the event to qualify for the NWC Championships as well. James Markin wrapped up Puget Sound's involvement in that race with a time of 10:22.70 to qualify for the NWCs as well. Justin Bigelow ran the 10,000 meter run for the Loggers as well, qualifying for the NWCs with a 33:31 mark.

Jonathan Rosenberg set two personal best marks in two events Friday night, running the 100 meter dash in 11.37 and the 200 meter dash in 22.91. Both of those tines were conference qualifying marks as well. Also qualifying for the NWCs in two events was Dillon Gongliewski. Gongliewski ran the 110 meter high hurdles in 16.70 and tallied a mark of 53.36 meters in the javelin throw to meet conference standards in both of those events as well.

Wrapping up the Loggers' NWC qualifiers in the Redlands Invitational, Graham Ashby ran the 800 meter run in a season best 1:59.76.

The Puget Sound track and field team next competes at its own Peyton Scoring Meet on Saturday, March 29, 2014. The first events of that competition will begin at 10:30 a.m. that Saturday at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
