TACOMA, Wash. – Alexis Noren scored her 1,000th point as a Logger, Jamie Lange recorded her eighth-consecutive double-double, and the No. 9/10 Puget Sound women's basketball team took down UC Santa Cruz, 93-74, on Friday evening in the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament First Round.
Lange led all scorers with 30 points, while also pulling down 14 boards in her ninth double-double of the season. Alexis Noren recorded 15 points and eight rebounds, including a free throw with four minutes remaining in the game to give her 1,000 career points. Mikaela Limper added 14 points, while Elizabeth Prewitt chipped in 13 points. Caitlin Malvar scored seven points and notched 11 rebounds.
In a rocking Memorial Fieldhouse, the Loggers (26-2) began to take control of the game in the second quarter. After the Banana Slugs (14-11) led, 15-14, after the first ten minutes of play, Puget Sound outscored Santa Cruz, 30-17, to hold a 44-32 lead at halftime.
UC Santa Cruz cut the deficit down to five points in the third quarter, but the Loggers responded with a 25-5 run, and led 73-49. Puget Sound would keep the cushion around 20 for the final eight minutes to win comfortably.
Puget Sound shot 42.5 percent (31-for-73) from the field, while Santa Cruz shot 36.4 percent (24-for-66). The Loggers were 5-for-19 (26.3 percent) from beyond the arc. The Banana Slugs were 13-for-36 (36.1 percent) on 3-point shots. Puget Sound outrebounded UCSC 57-32.
The Loggers will take on familiar foe Whitman in the Second Round. The Blues advanced with a 76-72 win over George Fox in the First Round on Friday. Puget Sound and Whitman will face off for the fourth time this season on Saturday, March 4, at 7 p.m.
