Volleyball drops two games to nationally-ranked teams

La VERNE, CALIFORNIA – The Puget Sound volleyball team opened its 2015 campaign with a pair of losses to nationally-ranked teams in the Pacific Coast Classic on Friday.

Carthage 3, Puget Sound 0

Carthage entered the 2015 season ranked No. 11 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), though the Loggers kept pace in the third and final set. After losing the first two sets (25-14, 25-19),  the Loggers claimed a 10-6 lead in the third set following a service ace by Hanna Stinson.

The Lady Reds promptly called timeout, and then went on a 7-2 run to claim a 13-12 lead. Consecutive kills by Shawna Smith gave the Loggers a brief 15-14 edge, but Carthage tallied three consecutive points and never looked back.

Smith and Heather Sangster each recorded a double-double for Puget Sound. Smith finished with 10 kills and 11 digs, while Sangster posted 12 kills and 16 digs.
