Volleyball splits two games to begin Puget Sound Premiere

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound volleyball team won its first 2015 game in Memorial Fieldhouse as the Loggers opened the Puget Sound Premiere with a 3-0 win over Linfield. Puget Sound lost to Texas-Dallas later in the day, 3-0.

Puget Sound 3, Linfield 0 (25-20, 25-22, 30-28)

The Loggers opened the Puget Sound Premiere in convincing fashion by dominating Northwest Conference member Linfield, 3-0, in a non-conference bout on Friday. The victory was sealed with an electrifying third set. The Loggers held a 24-21 lead before the Wildcats rallied for three consecutive points. A kill by Rita Dexter allowed Puget Sound to take a 25-24 edge, but that was just the start of late back-and-forth action.

The Wildcats rallied for two straight points, but a Linfield attack error allowed the Loggers to even the score, 26-all. A joint block effort by Moira McVicar and Hannah Stinson gave Puget Sound a 27-26 advantage, but a bad set by the Loggers evened the score once more.

Linfield faulted again on an attack, but it made up for the blunder that tied the score, 28-28. A kill by freshman Kristen Miguel put the Loggers ahead, and McVicar's ace sealed the set and the match.

Kristen Lane's serving prowess yielded nine consecutive points for Puget Sound in the second set. Linfield held a 19-14 lead before Lane was put into the game to serve. Behind a pair of aces and two kills by Shawna Smith, the Loggers allied to take a 23-19 lead and held on to win the set.

Smith led all players with 16 kills, and McVicar recorded a double-double with 37 assists and 10 digs in the winning effort.

Texas-Dallas 3, Puget Sound 0 (28-18, 25-18, 25-12)

Texas-Dallas was too much to handle for the Loggers as the Comets blanked Puget Sound, 3-0. The Loggers committed 27 errors and came away with just 18 kills. On the flip side, the Comets, who received 10 votes in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, committed just 14 errors to 37 kills.

Rachael Garrison and Moira McVicar tied for the team lead with 14 digs apiece.

The Loggers continue the Puget Sound Premiere at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday. Puget Sound is slated to play Trinity at 12 p.m. and Pacific Lutheran at 6 p.m.
