LAKEWOOD, Wash. - Hayley Walker (Cambria, Calif./Coast Union) took fifth on the women's side and Francis Reynolds (Palo Alto, Calif.) took ninth on the men's side as the Loggers previewed the course for the 2010 NWC Championships during the 2009 Puget Sound Invitational on Saturday at Fort Steilacoom State Park in Lakewood, Wash.
In the women's race, Walker kept pace with the lead group, finishing the six-kilometer course in 22:56.70. The Loggers lost ground in the team race however as freshman Carrie Keith (Erie, Colo./Monarch) was the next UPS runner across the line, taking 33rd with a time of 25:14.75. Whitworth place four runners in the top ten to collect the team title with 36 points, 16 better than that of second place Whitman. Marci Klimek of Linfield was the top finisher in the women's race, finishing in a time of 22:23.45.
On the men's side, Reynolds struggled a bit on the cold, wet morning, finishing the 8k race in 26:57.74. Cameron Butler (Idaho Falls, Idaho) was 25th in a time of 27:57.30 while Casey Wall (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) took 28th with a time of 28:15.16. Whitworth took the men's team title as well, placing three runners in the top six to post 38 points. Shawn Fisher of Linfield took first with a time of 25:57.92 in the 76 man field.
The Loggers will next be in action on Oct. 31 when they travel down to Estacada, Ore. for the 2009 Northwest Conference Championships, hosted by Lewis & Clark.
